Gastric Bypass Mom

by Meghan
(Sacramento, Ca)

The New Me!
Starting weight: 295 lb.
Current weight: 200 lb.

I am married with three children. I live in Sacramento, Ca. I had gastric bypass weight loss surgery Sep 10th 2007,

I have lost 95 pounds and still would like to lose 40 more. Dr. Patching was my surgeon.

I have had a few ups and downs. I have to get Vitamin B injections twice a month, which really helps. I'm not as tired and weak feeling. It also keeps my hair from falling out as bad.

I still look in the mirror and see the old me. I don't see the thinner me that everyone else does.

I was out shopping with my mom and saw a beautiful dress. She said try it on! I looked at the size and said I would never fit in a size 14. She said just try! I went to try it on despite being worried it wouldn't fit and I would be depressed. But guess what... It fit and looked great.

For the first time realized, I am a new me.

The only thing I wish I would have been told was about the bad gas pain in the shoulder area after surgery. It was so bad I thought I was going to die.

I would do more research next time before doing weight loss surgery. I may have gone with the Lap-Band instead. Gastric bypass is a one time, permanent surgery and the Lap-Band can be adjusted, is reversible, and has less risk.

My Surgeon's Opinion of the Band...
by: Jayleigh

...FYI my surgeon refused to do the Lap Band surgery on me for several reasons. First, he has spent an exorbinant amount of time (over the last year) performing corrections/reconstructions, removals and RNY after Lap band (if that is at all possible after the destruction of the stomach by the band)... Second, the fact that you are resorting to major surgery to resolve a life-long issue with your weight, but only want a temporary, removable option is a problem. This is a LIFE-LONG issue, and we chose a LIFE-LONG resolution. Additionally, the bypass, itself, is a major tool Finally, the lap band requires constant fillings etc, and can slip or embed in the stomach and surrounding organs/tissues. So, for these reasons, we went with RNY. As I said, this is a decision based on the experience of my surgeon, and I would not judge anyone who chose that Lap Band and is happy with that decision. I am happy with my surgery and thankful for this opportunity to turn my life around!
