Healthy Eating Principles

Eating right doesn't have to be complicated.

Follow these simple healthy eating principles and you'll be well on your way to improving your diet and establishing a healthy relationship with food.

It's not rocket science. Really.

Start every day with breakfast

You wouldn't try to drive your car to work in the morning without gas in it would you? Food is fuel!

Continue to eat every 3-4 hours thereafter

Small, frequent meals will keep your energy level steady all day and will prevent you from getting overly hungry...which usually leads to overeating!

Include a small amount of protein with every meal

Protein helps fill you up and curbs hunger between meals. Good sources include:

  • Egg (whites)
  • Nonfat/lowfat cottage cheese
  • Nonfat/lowfat cheese
  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Fish
  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Protein powder
  • Beans
  • Nuts/nut butters (peanut butter, almond butter)

Include at least one fruit or vegetable every meal

Fruits and vegetables have lots of important vitamins and are filling (due to their high water content), yet very low in calories.

Include a small amount of healthy fat every meal

"Healthy" fats are those of plant (or fish) origin:

  • Olive oil
  • Avocado
  • Raw nuts: almonds, walnuts, pecans, Brazil nuts, etc.
  • Raw seeds: pumpkin, sunflower, ground flaxseeds
  • Wild salmon
  • Flaxseed oil
  • Canola oil

Pay attention to portion sizes

Large portions translate into excess calories which results in weight gain.
