How to Save $ on Medifast Diet

I am over 60 yrs young. I had 90 lbs to lose. I lost 32 lbs in 18 months on my own, walking & eating sensibly, then I could not lose anymore. I decided to join Medifast & have lost and additional 58 lbs on Medifast from August 2009 to Jan 2010 (5 months). I am now at goal.


At the Medifast center, they sold me a program for 18 months (4 months to lose weight and 14 months to learn to not gain)for $1,400.00 plus their meals.

I was put on the Jumpstart program, 5 Medifast meals a day plus one Lean and Green meal. The Medifast oatmeal is like wallpaper paste, so I substituted plain prepackaged oatmeal. Since the Medifast oatmeal is $2.30 a package and the regular oatmeal from the grocery store is 30 cents a package, it saved $2 a day ($60 a month) and I still lost weight.

I also decided to substitute an apple for my afternoon Medifast meal. Since a small apple is 3 for a $1.00, I saved almost $2 a day (another $60 a month) and continued to lose weight.

They limit you to half a cup of sugarfree jello a day, but I often had up to 4 jellos a day. Sugar free pickles are supposed to be limited, but I often had 4 spears. The results were that it took me 5 months instead of 4 months to lose the 58 lbs and I saved at least $500.

I am now half way through maintenance. The Medifast counselors want you to still be buying at least 2 Medifast meals a day. But the counselors make commission from selling you the Medifast meals!!! I only use them for about 1 or 2 meals a week, too busy or not near any wholesome food choices.

My counselor is amazed that I am doing so well keeping the weight off without using their meals. I feel great, walk every day, have cut my arthritis medicine in half & lowered my blood pressure to normal.

If you are lactose intolerant as I am, do not use any of the Medifast shakes, not even the "low lactose" shakes. I got severely constipated from the shakes. Go to the Medifast website & find the list of lactose FREE products to use.

Now our daughter, who needed to lose 150 lbs has lost 40 lbs in 4 months by just buying the Medifast products online & using 3 a day, plus one pack of oatmeal, one apple & a Lean and Green meal.

I do not buy any vitamins or supplements from Medifast. I buy them from a warehouse club such as Costco, much cheaper & better.

By losing the weight at 10 lbs a month instead of more, you will not have severe skin sagging.

I am so glad I found this post. I have planned to substitute real oatmeal for breakfast and do an apple a day as well. Besides the money saved, it will be a welcome, tasty change from the wallpaper paste!

I am grateful for the MF diet for pointing me in the right direction, especially in eating small portions every 2-3 hours. I realize that I will never be able to eat like I did before, mainly because of health problems....heart, blood pressure and spinal stenosis. I HAD to lose weight to combat those problems.

I have lost 19 pounds in 8 weeks....25 to goal. Reading posts on the web has been my best motivator. I will be 75 on my next birthday.
