The UltraMetabolism Diet
Automatic Weight Loss?

What is UltraMetabolism?

UltraMetabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss, is an 8 week plan designed to help you lose weight "based on your own unique genetic needs."

The details of the plan are defined in the New York Times best selling book written by Dr. Mark Hyman, MD, editor in chief of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine and a former co-medical director at Canyon Ranch Health Resort in Lenox, Massachusetts.

The program includes menus, recipes, and shopping lists, as well as recommendations for supplements, exercise, and lifestyle treatments.

What Are the UltraMetabolism Rules?

Simply put: Eat the right foods to send instructions of weight loss and health to your body. Eat the wrong foods and send messages of weight gain and disease.

Earth shattering, I know! Of course you already know that eating broccoli and spinach will help you lose weight while a diet of fast food and junk food may send you to an early grave.

However, Hyman makes the case for eating the right foods even stronger by claiming the basis is rooted in an emerging science called Nutrigenomics (the study of how food interacts with your genes).

The program is designed around a theory that people get fat because their systems become toxic, inflamed, stressed, and imbalanced as a result of choosing foods that the body is not designed to process.

Food contains information and instructions that make our bodies work properly. You will discover from reading the book that apples and fish for example, contain good information. However, no matter how much you want them to, french fries won't tell your body to get healthy and slim.

The diet encourages you to eliminate white rice, refined grains, processed red meats and caffeinated beverages.

Sure, you already know you should probably do this

However, Dr. Hyman reminds us of an important fact: that food is more than numbers, i.e. calories, or grams of fat, protein and carbohydrate.

Your body and everything in it (namely your genes) operate via the information you give them. Knowing this, it might serve you well to think twice before you choose a Twinkie, recognizing that a banana will send better "messages" for weight loss and health.

The UltraMetabolism plan has an initial “detox” phase and longer “rebalancing” phase. The diet defines 7 Keys to Weight Loss and dispels 7 Weight Loss Myths.

The Seven Keys to Weight Loss are:

  • Control Your Appetite
  • Subdue Stress
  • Cool the Fire of Inflammation
  • Prevent Oxidative Stress or "Rust"
  • Turn Calories to Energy
  • Fortify Your Thyroid
  • Love Your Liver

The Seven Weight Loss Myths are:

  • The Starvation Myth: Eat Less + Exercise More = Weight Loss
  • The Calorie Myth: All Calories Are Created Equal
  • The Fat Myth: Eating Fat Makes You Fat
  • The Carb Myth: Eating Low Carb or No Carb Will Make You Thin
  • The Sumo Wrestler Myth: Skipping Meals Helps You Lose Weight
  • The French Paradox Myth: The French Are Thin Because They Drink Wine and Eat Butter
  • The Protector Myth: Government Policies and Food Industry Regulations Protect Our Health

According to Dr. Hyman, when we start sending our bodies positive messages through healthful foods packed with nutrients, our bodies respond with improved health, more energy and a slimmer figure.

UltraMetabolism Positives

I love the fact that the program promotes food choices based on how food affects your health and your body's chemistry, vs. choosing a food because it contains X number of calories or Z grams of carb.

The diet book includes many tools including recipes and resources, while the UltraMetabolism website provides a community where you can contact others to share experiences and build support.

Ultrametabolism Negatives

Although there is merit to the science of Nutrigenomics, the book's theory may reach beyond current scientific evidence.
