Yes, It's Really Called
YOU On A Diet

What is YOU On a Diet?

Sometimes referred to as The YOU Diet, it is truly a lifestyle approach to weight loss. No quick fixes and gimmicks here! No wonder even Oprah jumped on the YOU Diet bandwagon!

What are "The Rules"?

YOU On a Diet Rule #1: Make Your Eating Plan Automatic

  • Eat three main meals, plus planned snacks. In other words, plan to eat every 3-4 hours, as I myself recommend!
  • Eat the same things for breakfast and lunch almost every day. Yes, you read that correctly...the same things.

Rule #2: Remember That Waist Is More Important Than Weight

  • Ditch the scale in favor of the tape measure.
  • Measure your waist and aim small. (Ideal is 32½ inches or less for women and 35 inches or less for men.)

I like this concept because it emphasizes the point that your health matters...

...not just what size dress or pants you can fit into.

Your health is affected not only by how much body fat you have, but also by where it's located on your body. If you carry your excess weight around your waist, you have a greater risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke and high blood pressure.

Check your waist to hip ratio.

Rule #3: Stay Satisfied

  • Eat often. Again, every 3-4 hours or 5-6 times throughout the day -- so you’re constantly satisfied.
  • Eat plenty of fiber in the morning. The claim is that fiber will help control afternoon cravings.

As I always say, a bad decision and a big portion usually happen when you allow yourself to get overly hungry, so staying satisfied just makes sense.

Rule #4: Add Support

Everyone needs support. Or, as I always say...

...even the best athletes need a coach.

The YOU On a Diet website has a nice community with message boards, and a feature to help you find an online dieting buddy...

...someone to support and encourage you and someone to whom you can be responsible.

Rule #5: Know That It's OK to Make Mistakes

Just make a "YOU-turn" to change course. I couldn't have said it better myself.

YOU On a Diet Cons

Eating the same things everyday (for breakfast and lunch) certainly works...

...but it's also really boring! While You On a Diet is really intended to be a "lifestyle," I don't think it's realistic to believe you are going to eat the same things everyday for the rest of your life! After all, variety is the spice of life.

YOU On a Diet Pros

  • The authors, Drs. Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen, are well-respected experts in the field.
  • The recommendations are reasonable, achievable, and sustainable, for the most part.
  • The book has a lot of recipes and good advice for label reading and dining out.
  • The You On a Diet website provides free weekly menus along with grocery lists.

My Professional Opinion:

I like this diet a lot!!
